Description

Drawing from philosophical and faith based ethical theories and systems, this course addresses the analysis and evaluation of selected controversies in law, politics, and medicine.Ethical theories to be surveyed include the virtue ethics of the Greeks, ethics and virtues in Christianity, natural law theories, social contract theories, Kantian ethics, pluralistic ethical theory, the ethics of caring, and case-based ethics. Issues and controversies where application of theories and systems of ethics will be addressed include the following issues: poverty, world hunger, racism, and death penalty, civil disobedience, civil rights, freedom of religious expression, institutional ethics in the private and public sector, privacy, abortion, reproductive and genetic technologies, genomonics, termination of medical treatment, and just allocation of limited medical resources.
