Description

This course introduces the student to generalist approach as a helping professional and its mission to address a wide range of social problems, issues and needs of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities to improve the quality of life from an Afrocentric perspective. An overview is provided of generalist social work, its purpose, goals, functions, common base knowledge, values, skills, and principles that guide competent practice. Emphasis is placed on appreciation and respect for human diversity and the social worker's commitment to promote social and economic justice for persons in marginalized groups. This course is designed to present a candid look at various issues that impact the social work profession, which will enable the student to evaluate and resolve ethical dilemmas in the social work profession. Prerequisite: SOSW 203. Required for social work majors.
