Description
An introduction to basic concepts and procedures in deductive logic and inductive reasoning for philosophy majors and others preparing for the logical reasoning component of graduate school, law school or medical school admission tests. Students learn to apply analytical procedures in formal, deductive arguments; to identify valid forms of argument using Aristotle's patterns of syllogistic reasoning and the Square of Oppositon; to identify valid forms of argument using Venn Diagrams and truth tables; to identify fallacies of language; to distinguish strong and weak inductive arguments. Recommended for majors in Social Sciences, Natural and Physical Science, Mathematics and Philosophy and Religion. Prerequisite: Junior standing or instructor's permission.
